Document Summary

Chapter 1: organizing categorical data: raw data is messy and difficult to understand. Anecdotes a story that someone tells about their experience: one can never use an anecdote to make an assumption about a large group of people. Infomercials use the people that enjoyed the product when in reality more than half of the people didn"t enjoy it. Treatment group receives the treatment or has the characteristic of interest. Control group doesn"t receive treatment or doesn"t have the characteristic of interest. Observational study when the participants get to choose to be in the treatment group or the control group: in a controlled experiment, the people doing the surveying choose, cannot conclude a cause/effect relationship. We choose our own color of car therefore this would be an observational study. Confounding variable difference between the two groups that could explain why outcomes were different: people with grey hair have more wrinkles.
