Africa seen as underdeveloped, fail modernization as perceptions of african in media. At a time demographic growth, africa"s population declines dramatically, due to warfare, disease, and famine. Modernity and modern institutions were not acquired through peaceful exchange, or gradual acquisition, but through conquest and sudden imposition. Colonies created as specialized producers of certain commodities for the world market- sets economic pattern. Colonies wanted same thing to get to capitalist society. Originally has a neutral meaning, equivalent to nation or people. Since the 18th century, europeans use the word to distinguish themselves (people who live in nations) from allegedly less advanced peoples. By mid-19th century, the word changes to describes primitive political organization that were backward, primordial and unchanging. Tribe comes to mean something you are born into, and incapable of leaving. After conquest, europeans faced with the challenge of governing complex and diverse. Generally they adopt a strategy of indirect rule.
