The word chimurenga" literally means to quarrel or fight; it originated from the shona language. This revolutionary struggle got majority of the surrounding people to stand for their rights as people, and for justice in their respective communities. Thomas mapfumo came up with the term to describe the revolutionary music that accompanied zimbabwe"s efforts to gain freedom in the 1970s. Mapfumo used this music to stir excitement among the people and to bring to attention a number of different concerns. While the roots of this music were engrained in. Shona mbira music, he used electrical instruments to give it a more modern twist. Through different parties mapfumo was exposed to through his grandma, he quickly learned that shona music was largely inclusive. Unlike western styles, where the audience did not participate, Shona music allowed most if not all members to follow along as much as they wanted.
