Document Summary

History of stress: stress biology and allostasis. There is an intimate relationship (equilibrium) between external and internal environments through continuous and exact compensatory adjustments. In 1926 coined the term homeostasis to describe the process if maintaining internal stability in the face of environmental change. Tied behavioral changes (most notably moods) to changes in hormone levels (adrenaline/epinephrine) when then altered other bodily processes to achieve optimal conditions. Coined the term stress : developed general adaptation syndrome, three stage process that relates to stress to disease. Stage 1, and reflects physiological maintenance (homeostasis) in the face of environmental stressors: stage 3, stage of exhaustion in which the ability of tissues to resist stress first declines then fails, ultimately leading to disease. That is, everything from the environment presents a challenge to homeostasis (some large, some small). Thus, the process of development of a chronic degenerative disease may be long underway while there is still an apparent healthy phenotype.
