BIOL 371 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Sequential Hermaphroditism, Body Cavity, Lophophore
Document Summary
Look kinda like cnidarian polyps but are much more complex. Ciliary beat sweeps water with dentrits and protozoans into the mouth. The shorter tentacles direct the food to the mouth. The mouth and anus are both at the top. Nervous system has a brain and it receives info from sensory bristles. Monecious are called protandrous hermaphrodites which means that they are first one gender (male) and then switch to the other. All have a structure called a lophophore which is a particular arrangement of tentacles. Tentacles are ciliated and on a fold of the body wall. Include part of the pseudocoelom which is fluid filled. Box can be gelatinous, chitinous, or stiffened with calcium or sand. Maybe encrusting on most any hard surface-rocks, bottom of icebergs, and ship hulls. Zoodis will pop tentacles out of their box using muscles, the muscles increase they hydrostatic pressure to pop out the tentacles. The ciliary current sweeps the food into the mouth.
