The only real evidence that any critic may bring before his gaze is the finished poem. If the poem is a real creation, it is a kind of knowledge that we did not possess before. It"s not knowledge about something else; the poem is the fullness of that knowledge. Poetry is a superior form of knowledge which gives us the fullness of human experience, not just the facts and abstractions that suffice for knowledge in a scientific age. Eliot"s unified sensibility: think the feelings, feel the thoughts. Penn warren: a superior form of knowledge that gives the fullness of human experience. Tate: a kind og knowledge we didn"t possess before, a fullness of knowledge. So the poem is going to yoke together two themes: Narcissus: standing in for modern intellectual man cut off from the world with. Confederate soldiers: standing in for a loss of faith.
