Document Summary

Geoid: truest figure of the earth, has bulges and depressions all over it, makes it harder to represent and to measure. Try and transfer the features from the curved ellipsoid to flat maps. A systematic rendering of locations from the earth"s surface onto a flat map surface. The distortion can be in different places based on what you are looking for. Can effect how places are represented and perceived, i. e. how the soviet union is perceived. Mercator: known as the basic projection used throughout schools, was dominant during the cold war. Robinson: replaced mercator after fall of the soviet union. Cylindrical: tangent: equatorial countries, low latitudes, toward the poles increases the distortion. Conic: secant: usa, east/ west orientation. Plane/ azimuthal: tangent: poles, high latitudes. Most common projections for the usa: lambert conformal conic, transverse mercator. Feature: points, line or areas, most common for road maps. Choropleth: depict quantitative information, population per square mile, mile map.
