GEOL 114 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Eclogite, The Mantle, Oceanic Crust
Document Summary
Generate oceanic crust via partial melting of mantle material. Must remain solid through all temperatures and pressures so s waves can propagate through the mantle a low-velocity zone in some locations. Physical properties must agree with our observations of p-wave velocity (cid:523)aka mohorovicic"s observations(cid:524), generate 2nd order velocity, and generate. Must agree with the densities of the earth. Consistent with our indirect observations of mantle materials (indirect because bringing the materials to the earth alters them, which must be accounted for) Kimberlite pipes: remnants of volcanic pipes that brought materials to the surface of the earth from the mantle. We assume this because several kimberlite pipes in older continental areas contain diamonds, which only form at pressures and temperatures much higher than what is inside of these pipes. Other kimberlite pipes contain rocks such as garnet peridotites and eclogites. Nodules in hawaiian volcanic rocks: the active volcanoes in hawaii form volcanic rock, which contain small pieces of other rocks.
