Richard jackson asserts that each of us, as individuals, has a role in creating healthy and sustainable communities. This reading response will explore the roles of various organizations, including different layers of government, nonprofits and non-governmental organizations, business and professionals, academic institutions, and citizens and global community. Also, this paper will provide various ways to join with other concerned individuals and groups to take action for the issues of concern. Government is one of the critical players in the effort to rebuild the community. Jackson claims that government should be about solving problems and protecting public health (178). Government in different levels sets policies and makes critical decisions that affect the environment and public health of the communities. Municipal government holds critical power for decisions on land use and planning. City planners determine the existence of sidewalks, maintenance of local parks, choice between fast-food outlets or a farmers market.
