What is development: orderly (sequential, directional (build on itself; i. e. from cooing to sentences, stable (do not tend to lose acquired skills unless there is some sort of trauma- psychological, physical, etc. ) Major issues in developmental psychology: is development a matter of quantitative or qualitative change? (quantitative: amount; 3 year olds know more than 1 year olds, can do more. qualitative: difference in kind; i have oranges you have apples) I want it cut in 4 because i"m really hungry. Children think about the world differently, feel about the world differently. 2 year old, when are they gonna put that guy in the mud? : continuous or discontinuous? (linear versus steps and stages. Discontinuous: qualitative. : are genetic or environmental factors the most important determinants of child development and behavior? (nature versus nurture. How much is nature and how much is nurture?) My uncle is an alcoholic, will i be an alcoholic: importance of context.
