Document Summary

Way in which we record past events and knowledge: acquisition, storage, retrieval. Older ones that have weight is info processing approach: divides memory into discrete storage areas. Sensory register (at least 2 kinds) large but brief duration. Focuses attention on some part that moves in to short term memory. When he asked them to report all of them, they couldn"t get that many of them. He taught them tonal procedure (each tone corresponded for a different row). They would see the array and knew that the tones meant. They didn"t know which tone they were getting, but nonetheless it was perfect. Short term memory - if you act upon it (repeat it over and over again) might move into long term. Hold info for 15 seconds, but only hold about 7 things (magic seven: seas, etc) If you focus your attention repeating and manipulating information, you can hold it indefinitely (using your working memory)
