PSYC 362 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Sex Steroid, Secondary Sex Characteristic, Vas Deferens
Document Summary
Reproductive behaviors are social behaviors that are critical for survival of the species: courting, mating, parental behavior. Behaviors vary systematically in males and females: most forms of aggressive behavior are dimorphic. Early hormone experience plays a prominent role if the development and control of sexually dimorphic behaviors. Chromosomal: xx or xy (23rd chromosome pair) is determined at conception. Gonadal: testes or ovaries, determined by y chromosome (gene sry testes- determining factor, located on y chromosome): hormonal: estrogen/androgen (organizational and activational effects) The gonads= an ovary or testis: production of ova or sperm and, secretion of hormones. Internal reproductive structures: mullerian system: fimbriae and fallopian tubes, uterus, inner 2/3 of vagina, wolffian system: epididymis, vas deferens, and seminal vesicles. The gender of internal sex organs of a fetus is determined by the presence (or absence) or testes-secreted hormones. Presence of hormones: t and anti-mullerian substance wolffian system develops (mullerian system regresses).
