Document Summary

I argue that these beliefs and generalizations from the public are false. Thinness does not determine whether a person is healthy or not! The reasons are because of media influences, lack of education, and peer pressures. Media: it is not media"s fault that society believes what they do because it essentially the media portrays what society wants to see on tv. Lack of education: some schools don"t teach about this until late teens because they don"t believe that children are old enough to handle truths about the body until they are adolescents. That way, schools justify why they don"t teach it, and why this continues to become a social norm. They believe it is better to preserve a child"s mentality/mindset about bodies. Peer pressures: families may justify themselves by stating that they are wiser than their kids and by being brutally honest and harsh about weight, they are making their children more aware.
