10,000 years ago domestication of plants and animals occurred. Have to wait and tend plants, harvesting also takes a lot of time. People have to settle near their food. Cities grew so states grew stems from seeds in ground. Slash and burn because soil does(cid:374)"t have the (cid:374)e(cid:272)essary nutrients: they cut forest and then leave it to dry for eight months. The villages and houses are kept close together. The storage bins and animals are all in the same central location. The land is controlled by family and kinship. Rely on roots and tree crops, main plant is yams. Calendar is based on the yam cycle. Months are named for the work being done in the fields (gardens) Yams are given to other tribes (clans) Higher status is given to the man who gives away the most yams. As men reach higher grades he is treated with more respect.
