Status any position that determines where someone fits in society. Power the ability to control the behavior of others (through rewards and punishments) Authority the right to wield power. Prestige social respect (very important to nonstate) Wealth the ability to control the distribution and consumption of resources. Can have power but no authority; cannot have authority without power. Ascribed status: social status that a person does not choose and which cannot be changed, often assigned at birth: born royalty you cannot change it. Achieved status: social status that comes through talents, efforts, and accomplishments: can also be a result of chance, serendipity, dumb luck, mistakes. No one has power or authority over others (not even parents over children) No formal law or right to punish others.
