Document Summary

Body can"t synthesize sufficient amounts of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Since these must be obtained from diet they are called essential fatty acids. 16:0 palmitic acid - hexadecanoic acid - 63. 1 c. 18:3 a-linolenic- 9,12,15-octadecatrienoic - -17 c fat- solid at room temperature oil- liquid at room temperature eicosanoids: c20 compounds made from arachidonic acid, behave as local hormones, regulate temperature, blood pressure, platelet aggregation, smooth muscle contraction, pain responsemany things. Cyclopentane ring involved in: regulating blood pressure, inhibition of platelet aggregation, uterine contractions, promote inflammation (pain and fever) When tissues are injured, arachidonic acid is converted to prostaglandins that produce inflammation and pain in the area. Analgesics block production of prostaglandins and therefore decrease pain and inflammation and reduce fever. Nsaids: non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, relieve pain and swelling due to action of prostaglandins and thromboxanes, acetaminophen is not an nsaid but relieves pain by the same action. Health note: omega-3 fatty acids in fish oils.
