Social support is the verbal and nonverbal behavior intended to provide assistance to others. Benefits of social support: deterring distress, psychological well-being, relationship building, increased self-esteem and control. How does social support work: main effects hypothesis, social support --> positive outcomes, buffering hypothesis, stressor --> social support --> positive outcomes, there is a situation/event/etc. where people feel stressed, stressor --> social support --> reappraisal --> positive. Outcomes: reappraisal is viewing the stressors in a more positive and less threatening way. Person-centeredness is the extent to which messages acknowledge and validate the feelings of the distressed person.
