EGGS 107 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Abraham Ortelius, Himalayas, Transform Fault
Document Summary
People started to think that things fit together like puzzle pieces. One of the first to propose a theory. People ignored him because he was a climatologist. Evidence of glaciers--- south america, africa, india (all by the equator; so how did glaciers get there?) Glaciers flow land to water not water to land. So that means given the glacial flow pattern the continents were at one point all attached. There were different types of evidence that were only able to be explained if the theory, that all the continents were together at one point, was true. It is found in australia, new guinea and other places. If you look at a map of how the continents would have fit together, it makes sense. African ostriches (africa), kiwis (new zealand), emu (north america) All of the same family, all flightless. If the continents were connected, they could have walked to the various parts and that adapted according to their new environment.
