Definition of communication disorder - speech or language impairment. Speech impairments: articulation disorders-errors in the production of sounds, fluency disorders-difficulties with the flow or rhythm of speech, voice disorders-p(cid:396)o(cid:271)le(cid:373)s (cid:449)ith the (cid:395)uality o(cid:396) use of o(cid:374)e"s (cid:448)oi(cid:272)e. Language impairments (receptive and expressive: the form of language (phonology, morphology, and syntax, the content of language (semantics, the function of language (pragmatics) Identification and assessment: screening and teacher observation, evaluation components, case history and physical examination, articulation, hearing, phonological awareness and processing, vocabulary and overall language development test, assessment of language function, observation in natural settings. It is the second largest disability category under idea: approximately two thirds of school-age children served by slps are boys. Characteristics: speech sound errors, articulation disorders, phonological disorders, fluency disorder, voice disorder. Causes of speech impairments: cleft palate, paralysis of the speech muscles, absence of teeth, craniofacial abnormalities, enlarged adenoids, traumatic brain injury, dysarthria.
