Interpersonal goals are goals you achieve by communication. Defend your image, give advice, seek or give support, persuade, resolve a conflict, maintain a relationship. General goals would be losing weight, studying more, spend less money, get a high paying job, get an a on an exam. Three types of interpersonal goals: instrumental goals: the tangible, concrete resources or favors we try to get from other people. Ask for a ride to hospital, ask a friend to babysit, borrow notes from a friend, persuade boss for a raise: relational goals: preserving or changing the status of your relationship with someone. Make a friend, ask for a date, share an activity, ask a partner to move in with you, terminate a relationship, don"t want to hurt the relationship: self-presentational goals: communicating an image of ourselves to others. Appear intelligent in class, impress your boss by appearing confident and diligent, be the life of the party, appear socially popular on facebook.
