AN102 2­26­14 CHIMPANZEES • Male/female 1.2 level of sexual dimorphism • African tropical distribution o Rainforest o Secondary forest o Woodlands o Dry, riverine forests • Diet o Fruit o Insects o Meat o Leaves o Tools  Use tools to get food they otherwise couldn’t get  Termite fishing rod  Learned through social transmission • Spacing and population density 2 o Territories vary between 5­40 km  Smaller when fruit is in larger abundance o Density varies between 0.1­5 individuals per km  dependent on how much  food there is • Female Reproduction o 1 infant every 5 or 6 years o 30% of population dies in first 2 years of life o Females start sexual cycling at 10 years o Disperse at 13 years old o First reproduction at 15 years old after leaving home community • Communities o Fission fusion communities o Between 20­198 individuals o Temporary parties  Average 10 individuals in one party  Food availability greatly affects party size  Estrous females affect party size as well • Lifespan o 50­65 years • Sex differences o Males  More social sex
