AN102 2­19­14 Sexual Selection • A special type of natural selection in which the sexes acquire different morphology or  behavior either because o Competition among members of one sex for mates, individuals with certain traits  are more successful­ INTRASEXUAL SELECTION (male, male)  Contest Competition: individuals fight with members of the same sex for  mating access to members of the opposite sex (size matters) SEXUAL  DIMORPHISM  Males with superior navigation abilities find females more easily o Members of one sex choose to mate with members of the opposite whether or not  or to the extent of which the show a trait­ INTERSEXUAL SELECTION  (females choosing males)  Difficult to determine whether a trait evolves due to male­male  competition or female choice  Direct benefits­ some tangible resource from mating with male  (protection)  Indirect benefits­ good or compatible genes  Arbitrary, aesthetic traits­ exploits pre­existing  sensory bias from another domain • The most reproductively successful males have many more  children than the most successful females, but many males  have no offspring while almost all females have at least 2  • Trivers 1972: Sex differences in parental investment are  responsible for sex differences in competition and choosiness o Infant carrying o Gestation o Nursing • The sex that invests less in offspring should compete more for mates, as that sex can  reproduce more often, lead
