Lecture 1 02/16/2014 Physiology­study of the function of the organ systems. 4 Categories of cell types:  Epithelial cells: transport mechanisms; form barriers­sheet like membrane, i.e. stomach lining. Surrounds  the lumen, cavity or opening like the stomach.  Muscle cells: contractions: 3 groups: Cardiac Skeletal: voluntary Smooth: involuntary Nerve cells or neurons: electrical signaling. A nerve is a collection of neurons; leaves the brain and goes  through the body and they also contain blood vessels.  Connective tissue cells: secrete fibrous materials: secrete collagen, fibrous tissue­tendons/ligaments.  Tissues: collections of the same type of cell with similar functions.  Compartments: 67% fluid within the cell­intracellular fluid about 2/3. Plasma serum­7%. Remainder?  Interstitial fluid­interstitum compartment.  Lost blo
