Document Summary

Calci cation: tissue hardening with calcium (and other minerals as well, such as phosphorus). -blast is a cell that build a tissue by secreting its components. Cartilage is usually surrounded by tissue called perichondrium. It covers the connective tissue that surround hyaline and elastic cartilage. It does not cover brocartilage because it would become squished and damaged. There are three types of cartilage in the body: Elastic (like in ears or tip of nose). Hyaline, semi solid (top part of nose, part of ribs, lining of every joint surface). It is glassy in appearance (no visible bers). Brocartilage, job to absorb impact (on knees, in hips). It is weaker than bone but it is more exible and resilient. Cartilage"s extracellular matrix contains water, collagen and cells, which can be of two types: Once they make enough matrix to encase themselves in lacunae they become. Chondrocytes: mature cartilage cells that maintain the matrix (do not produce it)
