Traveling salesman, gregor samsa, wakes to find himself transformed into a large, insect-like creature. Gregor attempts to adjust to his new condition as he deals with being a burden to parents and sister, who are repelled by the horrible, venomous creature gregor has become. Gregor was the provider of the family, but is now incapable. The family takes on boarders to make money, gregor avoids them. Grete plays violin for them, gregor listens, a boarder spots gregor and they all leave. Grete says that life would be easier if gregor left and the parents agree. Gregor is determined to rid his family of his presence and dies in his room. The family is relieved that gregor is dead. They move into a smaller apartment and start trying to find a husband for grete. There was already something like an insect about him, and so he became an insect, literalizes a metaphor.
