Ergo: Great power status = a powerful navy.
Kaiser Wilhelm II really liked this book. Because traditionally Germans had believed of running
affairs only in home and Europe. But he believed that for them to be a great power, you have to
have an international presence through the use of sea (navy) etc.
He was a distant relative of Queen Victoria. Once he started building the navy, he was looked at
not only as a relative but now a threat.
Religious: Christianity under Siege
Charles Darwin, the origin of species – The bible does not offer an account of liberal creation of
humans etc. He instead said that humans/animals evolved from earlier species etc. He provided
evidence in the form of experiments etc. The Christian theology of the creation of earth starts
to be questioned. It led to a decline in faith.
So Christians came with a response: 1) Reinvigorate faith 2) Save Pagan Souls
Christian Missionaries: most important Dr. David Livingstone. He actively campaigned against
Dai’s fidigs. He was also a missionary in Africa who would convert many to Christianity.

- Kaiser Wilhelm II: He too believed German race was the best and therefore could cause
tension between Rhodes and Wilhelm.
