The Americas in World War 1:
Canada, Cuba, American territories, Brazil, Panama etc.
Why did so many Latin American countries sit out the war?
- When so many countries got involved, why did these resource rich countries stay
out? If you are involved in the war, then you had to suddenly coordinate your
foreign policies etc with every other country.
By 1918 many countries joined, but why by the end of it?
- Because if you are in the winning side, you can use that position to negotiate for
benefits.
- Financial Incentive: If declared war on another country, you automatically stop
trading with them. You also automatically take possession of anything from the
other countries goods on your ground. Cease boats etc.
The Colossus of the North
How does this affect relations amongst those countries and the USA?
- WW1: Intervention
There are many parts in Central America, where Woodrow thinks the
government is’t good eough. The U“A is isistet o patrollig their areas
every once in a while. Because? there is a lot of resources that had to be
protected. There was also access to the Panama Canal (which has a lot of
economic and geographic interests)
Wilson insisted that the intervention in Central America is just temporary
- Recall (1916): Jane Addams is associated with the Settlement House movements
which was designed to help new arrivals to the city. Why was she interested in
the Latin American area? - Immigration. She helped settle immigrants from
various parts of the world including Latin America.
- Assassination (1920): President Carranaza (Leader of Mexican Revolution) gets
assassinated. This leads to negative media coverage. The International pages of
major newspapers increasingly represent Central America as dangerous places
- Negative Media coverage (1920): Except Cuba every other Central American
country got a bad media coverage. This affected relations as American Media
was the one writing badly about their country. That is when voices critical to
USA- central America relations is raised.
- Recall (1924) : Military power etc
It was Coolidge who decided to recall the military representation in foreign land to cut
government cuts.
Trujillo : Took over the country he was given to oversee after US left, he decided to take over
and become leader
