1978 deng was rehabilitated and took more power and made more moderate policies. Still believed that the communist party had to be in control. Allow debate within a party until a decision is made and then everyone must fall in line. Deng used the people"s will to argue to grab power, but then he shut it down. Unlike mao, deng never said there should be no one man rule instead look for consensus among high rank leaders (top levels) 1980s- economic reforms and limited political reforms. There began to be more and more calls for political openness. 1987- most radical reformers ousted (hu yaobang) 1989 hu"s death inspires tiananmen square protests. He represented democracy, mourning him became a symbolic way to challenge regime. Zhao ziyang ousted for sympathizing with protesters. Provides nice overview of policies since mao and why they are now running into difficulty. 1989-2003 post tiananmen, post soviet constrained reform.
