Psychological disorders are common and account for the greatest proportion of disability in developed countries. When a psychological problem disrupts a person"s life and causes significant distress over a long period , the problem is considered a disorder. Examination of a person"s mental state to diagnose possible psychological disorders. The primary goal of assessment is to diagnose an individual so that treatment may be provided. The probable outcome, prognosis , will depend on the particular mental disorder that was diagnosed. Assessment is an ongoing process that does not stop with the initial diagnosis. Assessment can come in the forms of self-reports, observations, or interviews. No two unstructured interviews are likely to elicit identical information from the same patient. In structured interviews, clinicians ask standardized questions in the same order each time. Patients" answers are coded according to a predetermined formula and the diagnosis is based on the specific patterns of responses.
