Document Summary

Personality: consists of people"s characteristic thoughts, emotional responses, and behaviors. Genetic makeup may predispose certain traits or characteristics, but whether these genes are expressed depends on the unique circumstances that people face during their development. That being said, a surprising amount of personality seems to be rooted in nature, rather than nurture. Parenting style may not have may as much of an impact on personality as first thought. Children who aren"t biologically related, yet raised in the same household (adopted siblings) tend to be no more alike in personality than any two strangers. Personalities of adopted children bear no significant relationship to those of the adoptive parents. With age, people become less neurotic, less extroverted, and less open to new experiences; they also tend to become more agreeable and more conscientious. Evidence suggests that personality is related to genetics. One"s temperament is their general tendencies to feel or act a certain way.
