State of sleep characterized by rapid eye movements and often associated with dreaming. Hypnagogic hallucinations - weird visions, feeling of falling. Myoclonic jerk - reflex in response to feeling of falling. Beta (excited- awake); alpha (relaxed); theta (drowsy); combination (asleep); Level of arousal: similar to stage 2. Body position: very little muscle tone; body is frozen. Level of arousal: slight sounds won"t arouse. Very hard to wake up someone in this stage. As we get older, we begin to sleep less. During adolescence, you need more sleep (need at least 8 hours) When you"re elderly, you get more of stage 2 sleep. When people are deprived of sleep, they have trouble paying attention, can become immunosuppressed. Fatal familial insomnia- around 10 families have it; once they wake up they can"t go back to sleep; once they wake up they last around a week before they die.
