Memory can be thought of as a process and a system. Process is how we record, store, and retrieve information. System is what parts carry out these processes. Translating information into a neural code that the brain can process. Information comes in a electrical impulses and neurotransmitters which can be transduced by the brain. Encoding is how we acquire new information. Example: chronological order (i can easily describe the order of my day without thinking about it) Example: location, i know my surroundings on my walk to class but i don"t put effort into thinking about the location of the coffee shop i walk by each day, where i keep my phone/keys. Useful to keep something alive in short term memory, for long term memory elaborative rehearsal is needed. Focuses on informations" meaning ( elaborate on it) Helpful ways to put things into long term memory.
