Freud"s relationship w/ mother and wait to marry wife caused to to question sexual relations and there place in the realm of psychology. Psychoanalytic: sigmund freud"s basic approach to understanding personality. 1885 freud went to paris to study w/ the famous neuropathologist j. m. Charcot was studying hysteria: term used for various forms of mental illness for which no organic cause could be found and which could sometimes be cured by psychological and social in uences. Charcot and pierre janet used hypnosis: a process by which a person is induced into a trance state where action is partially under the control of another person. Free association: a method used in psychoanalysis in which an individual reports everything that comes into awareness. Freud begun to experiment in uence by joef breuer bc found hypnosis not helpful to many patients. Dreams might be key to unlock inner secrets, to freud they were products of inner psyche.
