10/2/12 Experiment #4 – Charles’ Law Purpose: To verify Charles’ Law, a version of the ideal gas law. See how gases really act  in contrast to the ideal gas law. Ideal gas law for 2 samples P 1  1 n R1   1   P V2 =2n RT2 2 Let P 1= P ,2n 1 n 2 Charles’ Law: V /T 1= 1 /T 2 2 I.  1) Stopper a 125 mL Erlenmeyer flask with a stopper with a hole 2) Mark position of the bottom of the stopper using a grease pencil or sharpie 3) Assemble the apparatus for heating the Erlenmeyer flask in boiling water a. Ring stand, tripod, wire gauze, Bunsen burner, sparker, large flask filled  with a lot of water b. Immobilize the flask on a clamp and boil the water in the large beaker  4) Immerse the flask in the boiling water 5) Boil for 7 minutes. 6) Prepare an ice bath in a small plastic tub. (Should be deep) II.  1) Extinguish flame 2) Close hole to stopper with heavy gloves 3) Unscrew clamp from ring stand 4) Remove and immerse in ice bath top down a. Hump should not be up! b. One person undoes the clamp while another stoppers the hole with his  finger c. Flask is plunged into ice bath while stoppering the hole d. Entire flask must be submerged 5) Release finger (It may recoil) (Keep hand on flask
