John thompson, documented the inhabitants of homeless, ect, Patronizing note of how photographers described/photographed the homeless. Thomas annan - social reform photographer in scotland. Hired by glasgow city to photograph slums, specifically tenements. Wanted to show the poor conditions of these buildings. Jacob riis - started out as a sensationalistic journalism/police reporter. Began using photography as an aid for his police reports. Focuses on tenement housing in nyc, wanted to elicit social concern. Patronizing style, subjects usually at a distance, featuring decrepit buildings, images from a high vantage point, little eye contact, ect. Reform was for society"s sake, not for the people living in these conditions. Published in book how the other half lives - 1890. Introduction of the halftone method, way of reproducing black and white photographs in text. Reflected middle class sensibilities and values, tried to project this onto city. One of first photographers to use magnesium power as flash.
