Document Summary

Examples where the us and soviet union competed against each other in the cold war. One single family dominated nicaragua from the 1930s to 1970s. They were supported by the us because they supported united states companies. But then there was a revolution that overthrew that family. And then a very socialist government was established, and was supported by the soviet union. Mossadeq was nationalist and wanted to nationalize iranian oil. So that the american and british would not continue to take such a great share of profits. The us opposed this by supporting a coup against him. So it was more an issue of nationalism than it was an issue of socialism. But because it took part during the cold war, people defined these events in cold war ideology/terms. American capitalism became the targets of soviet socialists. The french took over vietnam from the portuguese. Then the british came and took over vietnam from the french.
