Document Summary

Our fathers were great (thucydides and aristides) but we are chumps, so we do not want our sons to be chumps. The fathers want to do right through theirsons. They go to nicias and laches for advice on how to make their sons great. Nicias is the leader of athens at one point. Laches is a general, but not the leader of athens: la(cid:272)hes (cid:449)a(cid:374)ts ni(cid:272)ias" role as the leader of athe(cid:374)s. How can we turn our children into good soldiers? (just like the superior argument, like the clouds: nicias says, laches says, they dispute so socrates come in as the third party. Why do we need voting: people people disagree with each other, managing conflict in society. You must have an odd number to create a majority. Socrates is not a democrat, does not believe in majority rule. What you need is expert knowledge and not community opinion. Paternalism: knowledge should be the basis of decision making.
