Had to support self b/c from poor family. Never found audience for early philosophical theories he wrote. Was an atheist so no divine framework: denied him opportunity of teaching of university b/c atheist. Very much the empiricist: works with analytical statements. We derive all our ideas and concepts from experience. Deals with rationalism mathematics and logic. We must then base all our knowledge about the world and that includes our own human nature on experience. Two different types of moral thinking: reason, sentiment. All knowledge begins with type of perception: need reason to establish type of truth in fact. We have impressions (what we sense/assume) and we have ideas. Reason doesn"t influence on we behave/conduct ourselves: that comes from sentiment, reason does not have final word on how we respond/react. Moral judgments when we weigh and measure and determine the rightness or the. Wrongness of an action those are always based on sentiment.
