COM CM 331 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: General Idea
Document Summary
A pitch letter is a letter sent to a publication detailing a potential piece they should write. Pitch letters need to be compelling keep the publication"s interest to get them to write the piece. You need to know about the readership of the publication you"re trying to get into, and make sure your idea is relevant. If your idea isn"t something that wouldn"t usually be in their publication, it"s not likely that they"ll accept your idea. You are writing as the liaison between the author and the publication, you won"t be writing the story yourself. It"s very important to get to the point right away (the lede is important) don"t let the reader get bored and put your letter away. You need about 2-4 paragraphs to give the angle. Avoid gushing about how wonderful the publication is they know how great they are, make sure they know how great your idea is.
