Original position: a hypothetical situation where the parties: Rational: self-interested and want what is good for themselves. Don"t want to hurt anyone or have them be worse off, but don"t want to intentionally help, either. Rawls realizes that people don"t actually act this way all of the time, but he wants the original position to be as minimalist and non-controversial as possible. Agreeing the principle that will govern the parties when the veil is lifted. The parties of the contract would not choose the principle of utility. You wouldn"t choose a situation where you may have to suffer for net happiness . Maximize the good for the worst off position. Rawls believes that rationally, you should be conservative in uncertainty. The parties would choose the two principles of justice . Everyone should have as much freedom as possible without infringing on freedoms of others. Freedom of speech, assembly, vote, free from search and seizure, all can run for public office.
