Essays of 180 notre dame nuns born before 1917 were read. Essays analyzed 60 years later by totaling number of sentences with positive emotion words per nun. 0f 40% who had died by 1990, top quartile (top 25%) with positive emotion words lived 10 years longer. Emotions start with assessment/personal meaning of antecedent behavior. Either conscious or unconscious, to be personally significant ( good for me or bad for me ) Appraisal triggers cascade of response tendencies which can include subjective feeling states, facial expressions and thought action repertoire in response the opportunity or threat. Emotions can be positively toned (relief, hope, happiness, pride, gratitude, compassion) or negatively toned (anger, frights, sadness, envy, disgust). Positively toned emotions derive from a perceived opportunity. Negatively toned emotions derive from a perceived threat. When we think about negative emotions, there is a function for them. Historically, emotions have been understood as associated with specific action tendencies .
