CAS PS 231 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Dementia Praecox, Prefrontal Cortex, Thought Disorder
Document Summary
Evidence of hallucinations tickling is a surprise: positive symptoms: make themselves known by their presence, can be treated w/ drugs. Treated with drugs and appear in acute phase. Lacking from normal behavior, less ability to do normal behavior. Chronic symptoms that are correlated with ventricular enlargement (prefrontal cortex atrophy) Stable over time and difficult to treat. Examples: flat affect, social withdrawal, loss of drive, primary problem seems to be thought disorder which results from abnormal interactions between the cortex and the thalamus and cerebellum; may lead to delusions, hallucinations and other symptoms. Demographics: much more common in u. s. & europe than in 3rd world countries. Although, even when diagnosed, less severe than before: odd correlates. Some have characteristic body odor, decreased ability to smell the chemical themselves. Increased risk of colon cancer but below average probability of respiratory or brain cancer.
