Began to question freud"s emphasis on oedipal conflicts (sexuality) Narcissism as developmental and as a disturbance. Autonomy is self sufficiency which exists within a context of ongoing affiliative interactions. Narcissistic pd indicates that a problem occurred in the early development of the child. Empathy (trying to experience another person"s point of view) Idealizing (looking up to charismatic adults) - when you see that your parents have these skills and abilities that you want to incorporate into your adult life. The people you look up to, validate you. With these ingredients, several structures develop: (we have discussed id, ego, superego) Selfobject: objects or people that we experience as part of ourselves. They perform very important functions of the self - people who you hang around very frequently - you internalise these people as part of yourself. People who we anticipate will know our hearts. We expect our self objects to be an extension of ourselves.
