Introduction to Social Psych 01/16/2014  “No man is an island.”  Humans are social creatures.  Evolution made us that way – developmentally we need others to make it through childhood to  adulthood.  Cognitively we are hard­wired to look for patterns and understand the world around us (Piaget –  assimilation/accommodation).  We assess our own behaviors, thoughts, feelings at least in part by observing others and finding our  place “in the mix”. social facilitation – being in a competitive environment can enhance the performance of an individual Social Psychology Definition: scientific study of how feelings, thoughts, and behaviors are influenced by social stimuli Kurt Lewin: Behavior = F(P, E) Bio­Psycho­Social model biology is in the innermost circle, followed by… psychology family system/structure and then social groups the levels are interconnected person­in­context Social Interaction – Johari Window One on One One on Many – Leadership Ex: Couple/Friendship, DV Ex: MLK, Hitler Many on One Many on Many Ex: Social Learning, Peer Pressure Ex: Concert, Riot Conflicts in Psychological Environment approach­approach conflict between which of two things to approach (i.e. jobs) avoidance­avoidance conflict over whether to avoid one option or another
