Tx: therapeutic effects. Effects of Ldopa in Parkinson’s is an increase in voluntary movement. Dopamine
is the starter motor. Parkinson’s patients say they can’t move but they can jump in emergency situations.
How does this happen?
Dorsal striatum, where you form your procedural memories, form habits, and string them together to
get a coordinated series of motor memories.
Can activate this sequence of motor habits by adding dopamine to the dorsal striatum. In
emergency, something overrides this pathway, so it’s not conscious but a reflex.
Side effect of Ldopa: an increase in involuntary movement.
Some drugs can induce psychosis, an aspect of it is hallucination. Ldopa has a different mechanism of
action, not one of them. Crystal meth is a releaser, RUI, and an enzyme degradation inhibitor.
Synthetic versions of heroin:
Meperidine (G) (Demerol (T)): Prescription opioid analgesic.
MPPP: “designer drug” synthetic analog of Demerol. Very similar to it that it produced the same effects.
MPTP: sideproduct in “bad batches” of MPPP.
MPP+: body converts MPTP to MPP+ and MPP+ is toxic. Ki
