People don"t want to look bad: status usually ascribed; little social mobility, little geographic mobility. Based on rational self-interest: social order maintained for widely held fear of punishment from law, increased specialization and both social and geographical mobility, emile durkheim: mechanical solidarity and organic solidarity.
