Change takes place and we interpret things that happen to them/around them. Wanted people to see change shaped kinds of lives people were able to lead. Without awareness of change, mills warned people will feel trapped. Alterations in patters of culture, social structure and social behavior over time. Society as an entity that is responsive to social forces and undergoes change: changes in patters of culture/social structure. For past 40,000 people lived in substantive economics: provide for immediate needs. In last 5,000 years societies can provide an economic surplus: led to division of labor. In last 85 years acceleration of social change. Four models for understanding modernization: ferdinand t nnies: gemeinschaft and gesellschaft. People don"t want to look bad: status usually ascribed; little social mobility, little geographic mobility. Based on rational self-interest: social order maintained for widely held fear of punishment from law, increased specialization and both social and geographical mobility, emile durkheim: mechanical solidarity and organic solidarity.
