China"s 3rd generation of communist party leadership: jiang zemin (1989-2002) Jiang zemin and his successor are considered to be like their predecessor in that they are experts/reformers and reject the maoist way of communism. Dismissal of zhao ziyang (1987-1989) (gradual reform e orts) Time period when deng xiaoping was still in power, but was getting older and kept putting leaders into place that he could trust to ful ll his vision. Head of the party was a mentee, zhao ziyang. Zhao was red from post as secretary general of communist party because he was blamed by the leftists for allowing the millions of students and workers to protest in. Deng xiaoping sided with the leftist group which he didn"t receive support from. Deng feared in 1989 that what happened in the soviet union could happen in china if reforms took on a life of their own.
