Interpretive understanding, attempts through lots of research to put the researcher into situation where subject being studied is found. Weber = people did work systematically, orientation to work as center of life. Puritan work ethic, traditional work ethic = traditional economic ethic. Traditional is opposed to modern rational economic ethic/work ethic. Traditional work ethic = work is a necessary evil, we don"t like it, not fulfilled by it, work as little as possible and then enjoy life. God gives energy to work to the predestined, the saved conclude that god is favoring. Work as instrumental means to an end, work as simply utilitarian (useful) meaning. Influence on a group of people led by minister baxter protestant ethic. Now the world has become more secularized, still influences the world, orientation to work remains even w/o aspect of salvation (s/o ben franklin)
