Document Summary

Empirically developed for the purpose of evaluation. All items/questions given to each person in the same way so that you can compare relative performance. Measures of children"s language ability normed across large populations (e. g. compare to same age/grade) across people or groups of people. Usually get a percentile ranking or other. Used both for research and clinical questions. Standardized means that it was given to a bunch of children to make sure that they are reliable and assess the same thing in everyone. There are a number of items/questions that go from easy to hard. The goal is to assess a population and compare members amongst each other. They tell you where you fall within the general population. Usually compare children of the same age or grade, but sometimes we make adjustments. This allows us to compare a 5 year old to other ages. The scale shows that most people are within the middle/average of the population.
