The arrival of the blue pigment came late in the history of japan. Utagawa kuniyoshi was seen as an early father of the manga culture. Hokusai"s great wave off kanagawa is probably one of the best known prints today. The great wave is a part of a series of 36 views of mt. Hokusai produced a manual for future ukiyo-e artists. Later in the production of prints, social satire became more prominent. Some daimyo sought to give up their status in order to engage with the very successful commercial activity in. Edo (which they could not do as daimyo). Many samurai became masterless and resorted to banditry and illegal activity like commerce. These ronin tormented the prosperous chonin class by robbing them of their riches, etc. The tozama daimyo were the outside daimyo, who had strategic access to trade with china and the ryukyu islands. They were aware of china"s opium war and the devastation it caused.
